Experience the mystery of the Craters of The Moon Geothermal walk, only a 7-minute drive away from central Taupo. Dating back to the 1950’s, the craters were an unintended consequence when a nearby power station lowered the underground water levels. The lower water level began to boil more violently and produce more steam. This steam was released in what is now the walkway site, creating an unearthly atmosphere to explore. The main loop takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.
Accessibility
The bulk of the walkway is accessible but there are stairs to lookouts that are not.
Parking is reasonably close to walk entrance and there is an accessible bathroom available.
