The Redwoods is a park with over 5600 hectares of forest to explore. Named after the Californian Coast Redwoods that can be found here, this park is most well known for its walking tracks. These walks feature a renge of exotic tree species, panoramic views and native undergrowth. With its spectacular natural assets, the Redwoods are one of Rotorua’s greatest treasures.
There are two accessible walking tracks in The Redwoods as well as the tree top walk.
The Redwood Memorial Grove track is 2 km and is expected to take approximately 30 minutes. This track takes you through the Californian Redwoods. Planted in 1901, these towering giants are approximately 67 meters tall (219 feet). As an additional bonus, this track features a boardwalk that takes you to an old thermal pond which hosts diverse aquatic plant life.
The Waitawa Walk is an extends the Redwood Memorial Grove track and is 3.4km total with the expected time being 1 hour. This track goes further and features the New Zealand Silver Fern and giant Mamaku ferns. Visit at dusk to see the lamps light up.
While the tree top walk is not accessible, the start platform is due to a 115cm wide spiral ramp. The ramp is 50 metres long and quite steep so help may be required.
